Corporate Social Responsibility

We take responsibility for the effects of our corporate activities on man, environment and the way we conduct our business. We make conscious choices to create a balance between People, Planet and Profit.

Selecting varieties
The carbon footprint of a product is the sum of all greenhouse gas emissions in the life cycle of a product which can be attributed to that product. By far the most greenhouse gas emissions in the footprint of table stock potatoes are related to their cultivation (almost 90%). The largest emission sources are the production of nitrogen fertilizer (17%), nitrous oxide emission of the soil due to the use of fertilizer (17%) and the use of electricity for cold storage of consumption potatoes (22%).
The carbon footprint can differ per variety. One variety requires more fertilizers and cooling than the other. That is why we consider the carbon footprint when selecting varieties. One example is the Folva, a variety requiring little fertilizer. Further, we buy from growers who apply sustainable growing methods.

Sustainable
We have our own transport department, Jansen Transport. All the supply and dispatch of Landjuweel is self-administered by Jansen Transport. Because we also provide transport for other parties, we hardly have any empty kilometres. Our trucks are equipped with board computers, the fuel consumption figures are monitored and the drivers regularly take driver development trainings. In 2010, we realized a CO2 reduction of 8% on transport.
We also participated in a project on sustainable logistics of the Dutch province Groningen and the EVO (an organization representing the interests of Dutch companies active in transport). Also, we are currently participating in a project to find out whether the use of Longer Heavy Vehicles is profitable and feasible.
A correct choice of packing is important for logistics, quality and labour.

Each year, we set goals for reducing the environmental burden, we use green electricity, and the water for the rinsing of potatoes is recycled.

Involvement
We greatly value good employment practices. We bring this about by offering excellent terms of employment and employment facilities. Examples are the company fitness area and the company fruit, which we provide free of charge. We commit ourselves to having involved, motivated and well-educated employees who are comfortable in their own skin and who can work in a safe and healthy environment. Most employees live in the area, and this creates a strong connection to the neighbourhood, which we find very important.
